From Concept to SEO Value: A Journey Through the SERP

December 16, 2014

We all know that web design, content, social media, and SEO are all related, but HOW exactly are these concepts related? In this article, we're going break down the nature of the relationship between content creation, SEO, web development, and social media with a fun little story.

What Roles Do Web Design, Social Media & Content Play?

To set the stage for our story, let's assign roles to the various elements of SEO. Think of your website as your car, your social media profiles as your steering wheel & gas pedals, and your content as gasoline. Now, let's say you're trying to get somewhere. That "somewhere" is the most amazing party being thrown by Google - let's call it the Page One SERP Party. You get where this is going...

How Do We Use These Roles to Drive SEO?

You have all the elements you need to get to your destination (Google SERP), but you need to use these elements in the correct way. So in our hypothetical party scenario, for example, you would need a functional car. From there, you would need to fill your car’s tank with gas, turn the engine on, back out of the driveway, and navigate the roads to get to your destination. You can think of SEO the same way; you start with a functional website and fill it with relevant content. Then, you navigate the various social media channels to find the right audience and the right connections to grow your presence and authority. When you successfully navigate social media with your website, you will eventually arrive at your destination (Page One SERP Party!)

Where Do We Fall Short?

While most brands and SEOs understand the importance of quality content, many fall into the social media automation trap. As outlined above, quality content alone is not enough to get you where you want to go – you still need to use your content to drive your brand. Remember, content without social media is like filling your gas tank while idling – you keep burning resources without getting anywhere!

So Where Do We Go From Here?

If you’ve taken the time to create a website that’s both functional and optimized, you owe it to yourself to follow through with real social media engagement – not automated fluff. There’s nothing wrong with using social media scheduling software to help you manage your posting, but remember that these tools do not replace user engagement! Follow proper social media etiquette, and you’ll be on your way to your destination.
